Make A Woven Newspaper Sit-Upon
Teach A Child Beginning Basketweaving Skills With This Free Project

Step By Step Instructions

 • Gather Your Materials
  • 20 Full sheets of newspaper (color adds interest)
  • Clear acrylic spray to seal in ink (optional)
 • Procedure
  • Select 20 sheets of newspaper.
  • Layer two sheets of newspaper at a time.
  • Fold long edges to center, crease.
  • Fold each edge to center again.

  • Fold strip again making a strip about 23" x 3.5"
  • Repeat to make ten folded strips.

  • Lay out five folded strips lengthwise.
  • Weave five folded strips widthwise in an "over-one, under one" sequence.
  • Pack the woven strips so that each one is very close to the next.
  • Adjust the strips so they are squared up neatly.
  • Adjust the strips so that each end is an equal length.

  • Tuck the ends neatly.
  • Start with all strips that are last woven under the last crossing strip.
  • Fold the strip end over the outside strip and tuck the end back into the weaving.
  • Continue till all strips are tucked on the top side, then flip and tuck the strips from the other side.

  • No glue is needed, but be certain to tuck the ends neatly and securely.
  • Once your mat is complete you may want to spray it with clear acrylic finish to improve its water resistance and keep the printers ink from rubbing off.

  • Use your new Sit-Upon when you are gardening.
