Last time I discussed the Black Ash Basket.
This time we will celebrate the Black Ash Basketmaker.
Just as basketmakers have used Black Ash woodsplint as a material of choice for
generations, that tradition continues to be strong today.
Black Ash baskets in traditional forms as well as more contemporary interpretations are
well represented in this art form. Whether it is a Sweetgrass and Ash Globe basket
like the one here by Florence Benedict, a Fruit Basket with captured
twilled lid by Tony Stubblefield, a Shaker Carrier basket by John
McGuire, a curl embellished twill bowl by JoAnne Russo or one of many others,
the artistry is evident.
Most of the makers hail from the Northern United States and Southern Canada which is
consistent with the native habitat of the Black Ash (Fraxinus Nigra) tree.
I have prepared a Directory of Black Ash Basketmakers
which will help you make contact with these individuals and give you an introduction to
the fine work they do.
There is no way in this brief article to cover the subject of black ash
baskets and the artists who weave them. This is a subject that you can be sure we
will revisit often. If you know of material regarding black ash basketry not
mentioned here, post your comment to the board or contact me.
