Tradition/Innovation:
American Masterpieces of Southern Craft and Traditional Art

This major endeavor includes a traveling gallery exhibition as well as an online presentation. The extensive online presentation features artist interviews, podcasts, visual galleries and national arts education standards based learning materials. Be prepared to stay a while if you visit the site.

The combination of contemporary craft and traditional art in this exhibit offers visitors the opportunity to explore the “threads” between two different approaches to creating artwork and also to compare the approaches of traditional and contemporary artists. The concept of mastery and what makes a "master" artist is prominently discussed. 

Participating basketmakers include Clay Burnette, Herburt Jerome Dixon, Yvonne Grovner, Bessie Johnson, Mary Jane Prater, Henrietta Snype, Billie Ruth Sudduth, Leona Waddell and Carol Welch.

Tradition/Innovation will tour to one museum in each of Southern Arts Federation’s nine partner states in its first tour. Educational events at the various locations will supplement the exhibit tour: Tour dates confirmed as of January 2008 include:

Craft In America
A major project that documents the journey to the origins, artists and techniques of American crafts includes a 3-part PBS series, national touring exhibition, major publication and an online presentation. Basketmakers Dona Look (also see), Pat Courtney Gold, Ed Rossbach, Karyl Sisson,
Billie Ruth Sudduth, and Mary Jackson are featured among the craft artists profiled. Other fiber artists including Jane Sauer, Nettie Jackson, Leah Danberg, Kay Sekimachi and Carol Eckert have work pictured in the fiber section and will participate in the CRAFT IN AMERICA: EXPANDING TRADITIONS traveling exhibition.

Nancy Moore Bess: Extraordinary Baskets
January 13 - March 30, 2008. The Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, NJ hosts an exhibit of the work of basketmaker Nancy Moore Bess. Opening Reception, Sunday January 13, 2008, 2-4pm.

The Contemporary Katagami : Works of Jennifer Falck Linssen
Feb 11 - Apr 27, 2008. The Craft and Folk Art Museum, 5814 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA. The first solo museum exhibition of Jennifer Falck Linssen who utilizes the ancient Japanese art of katagami to create elegant, hand-carved vessels and baskets. Inspired by the delicacy of nature and the beauty of line, Linssen taps into this 1,000 year-old tradition to create sculptures that shimmer with splendor and light. By delicately “drawing” with a knife, Linssen gracefully replicates the patterns of nature in her sculptural forms.

6th International Fiber Biennial 2008
March 6-April 2008. Snyderman-Works Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Exhibit curated by Bruce Hoffman will feature works by many eminent basket makers and fiber artists including Kate Anderson, Dorothy Gill Barnes, Lanny Bergner, Nancy Moore Bess, Jerry Bleem, Michael Davis, Lindsay Ketterer Gates, Pat Hickman, Jan Hopkins, Susan kavicky, Kari Lonning, John McQueen, Mary Merkel-Hess, Debora Muhl, Hisako Sekijima, Kay Sekimachi, Jiro Yonezawa and others.

Baskets and Beyond - Bay Area Basket Makers
May 10-June 7, 2008. Opening Reception: Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. Burnett Gallery at Gualala Arts Center, Gualala, CA. Gualala Arts is pleased to again have the Bay Area Basket Makers for a free exhibit of member work.

Beyond Basketry
May 23-September 1, 2008. A National juried exhibition featuring the best of contemporary baskets at the Diary Barn Arts Center (Athens, Ohio). Participants will be featured in a full color book printed by Ohio University Press and select works will tour the country from Sept. 2006 - Dec. 2010. Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection
Sara and David Lieberman, with their impeccable eye and passion for contemporary craft, have assembled one of the best collections of contemporary baskets in the country. The acclaimed collection will travel to museums around the country. Under the auspices of the ASU Art Museum, the exhibition will travel to the Palo Alto Art Center, California, Jan. 27 – April 27, 2008; Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, July 19 – Nov. 2, 2008; Bellevue Arts Museum, Washington, Dec. 11, 2008 – March 22, 2009; and the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, early May – Sept. 7, 2009.

2008 NCBA Convention "My Baskets and Me"
March 13-16, 2008. NCBA Convention will be held in Raleigh, NC on March 13-16, 2008 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel. Classes will be scheduled to begin on Thursday afternoon and end on Sunday Morning. Seminars will be scheduled for Thursday or Sunday.

2008 Smithsonian Craft Show
April 10-13, 2008. This year's show will feature basketmakers Jennifer Heller Zurick, Mary A. Jackson, Deborah Muhl, Dennis Nahabetian, Leon Niehues, Joh Ricci, JoAnne Russo and Biba Schutz.

Land of Lincoln Basketweavers Association Spring Weave 2008
April 11-12, 2008. Cliffbreakers Convention Center, Rockford, Illinois. Instructors include Karen Griffith, Marla Helton, Thomas Holtkamp, Annetta Kraayeveld, Loni Labek, Pam Talsky, Ellonyia Yenney, Susan Tucker & Jennie Bass.

Northeast Basketmakers Gathering 2008
April 11-13, 2008. The Northeast Basketmakers Guild will be holding its fifth basketry event at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in West Springfield, Mass. Stateline Friends Weaving Retreat
April 17, 18, & 19, 2008. Whitewater Basketry Guild presents the 2008 retreat which will be held at the Kulhman Center on the Wayne County 4-H Fairgrounds in Richmond, IN.

Small Expressions 2008
April 18-July 6, 2008. Tampa Museum of Art. HGA's Convergence 2008 Tampa Bay Annual Exhibit of Small Scale Works. Small Expressions is an annual international, juried exhibit featuring high quality, contemporary small-scale works sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. to showcase fiber art of a small scale not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction.

Lake Country Basket Fest
May 2, 3, 4, 2008. Lake Country Basket Guild is sponsoring a members only basketry event to be held just west of Milwaukee, WI. Events will include basketmaking workshops, a silent auction, instructor's marketplace and much more.

2008 Stowe Basketry Festival
May 14-18, 2008. Internationally recognized & honored faculty ensures workshops & lectures of unparalleled value & excitement.

Silver Dollar City Basket Seminar
May 15-17, 2008. Three days of predominantly rattan reed basketry workshops with a small selection of pine needle, oak and other naturals mixed in.

Salsa y Salsa
May 23-August 23, 2008. The Arts Center, St. Petersburg, Florida. An international juried exhibit featuring multimedia fiber arts works held in conjunction with Handweavers Guild of America's Convergence 2008 Tampa Bay.

Personal Adornment: Accessories Exhibit
May 23-August 23, 2008. Florida Craftsmen Gallery, St. Petersburg, Florida. Exhibit of work limited to fiber techniques including, but not limited to, weaving, braiding, beading, felting, tablet weaving, free-form lace, crochet, knotting or knitting held in conjunction with HGA's Convergence 2008 Tampa Bay.

Weavin' in Winona
June 20-22, 2008. The 15th Annual Weavin’ in Winona Basket Workshop will be held at Tau Conference Center of Winona State University, Winona MN. Teachers who are scheduled are: Sandy Bulgrin, Venie Hinson, Julie Kleinrath, Marlene Meyer, Cass Schorsch, Marlys Sowers and Dianne Stanton. Convergence 2008
June 22-28, 2008. A biennial, international conference sponsored and organized by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. HGA's Convergence 2008 will be held in Tampa Bay, Florida, and will be hosted by the Florida Tropical Weavers Guild (FTWG). Convergence features special lectures, workshops, seminars, exhibits, tours, special events and a commercial vendors hall full of fibers, fiber-related equipment and an artist market.

River of Grass
June 25 - June 28, 2008. HGA's Convergence 2008 Tampa Bay Basketry Exhibit, Tampa Convention Center, Tampa, Florida. An international juried exhibit featuring functional or nonfunctional or traditional or nontraditional forms in basketry techniques.

Parrots, Peacocks and Palms
June 25-28, 2008. An international juried exhibit featuring functional interlaced or woven works held in conjunction with HGA's Convergence 2008 in Tampa Bay, Florida. This exhibit draws its inspiration for functional expression from the colors and patterns of the tropical flora and fauna of the palm tree, parrots and peacocks.

Donna Sakamoto Crispin Workshop at Ghost Ranch
July 15-21, 2008. Learn how to make a basket, and then transfer your new skills to woven jewelry. Start out making a plaited and twined bark basket and then apply the same methods to making a personal treasure pouch and a woven wire copper bracelet.

Tennessee Basketry Association 2008 Members Convention
July 16-19, 2008. Visit the Past, Weave the Present, Dream the Future. Held in Greeneville, TN. Annual conference will feature a wide selection of instructors and vendors. Registration booklet is available online.

2008 Mid Summer Weave – Weave ‘em Up and Lash ‘em Out
July 26-27, 2008. The Heritage Basketry Guild will be hosting an Eighth Annual "Mid Summer Weave" in Dayton, OH. Classes will offer a variety of techniques and materials, including native naturals. 

2008 Weaving Odyssey - Central Pennsylvania Basket Weavers’ Guild
September 19-21, 2008. Three day basketweaving conference to be held in Chambersburg, PA.

Columbia Basin Basketry Guild - Tidal Twinings Retreat
September 17-21, 2008. This five day annual fall retreat is planned by the members of Columbia Basin Basketry Guild and will be held near Lincoln City, OR.

Basketmaking in the Aran Islands
October 5-12, 2008. Spend a week in Inis Mór on the Aran Islands of Co. Galway, Ireland on a learning vacation. Participate in a workshop in traditional Irish willow basketmaking with Vincent Mac Cearán.

2008 AMB Convention
October 21-26, 2008. The annual Autumn convention of the Association of Michigan Basketmakers will be held at the McCamly Plaza Hotel Battle Creek, Michigan. Coordinators Judy Clark and Kathy Tessler.
