Ruth Andre - Little Scout and Little Feather Basket Kits

Those of you who would like the chance to introduce young children or beginning basketmakers to the wonderful craft of basketry now have a product that will make this task much easier.

Ruth Andre, an accomplished professional basketmaker in her own right, has recently released a new series of pre-cut basketweaving kits that were developed specifically for children and beginners. The Little Scout kit creates a small globe shaped basket completed in a simple spoke and weaver technique. Each kit is pre-cut from wire core paper splint and is available in a selection of color combinations. The wide range of color combinations makes them ideal for holiday, patriotic and seasonal group craft activities, home school and scout troop projects. The rolled paper does not need to be dyed and needs no water to be craft ready. The wire core in the spokes makes shaping the basket easy. Her Little Feather kit incorporates coiling on a small gourd.

Ruth sent me a sample kit so that I could try my hand at weaving a Little Scout Basket. The step by step instructions were clear and concise. They were amply illustrated, with each step accompanied by a black and white photo. I completed my test basket in a very short time and my finished basket looked just like the illustration. A pair of scissors, a pencil and a ruler are the only tools required.

The next time you plan to teach a group of children basketmaking skills in a classroom situation consider using Ruth's kits. I believe it would be an effective way to teach beginners basic basketmaking skills.
