tips and suggestions for signing your baskets. |

Whether you market your baskets, or
give them as gifts to family and friends, you should sign them. It is a good way to allow
the basket to be identified now and in years to come. We have been discussing a variety of
options in the BasketMakers Forum. I have gathered ideas from the Forum discussions and
other sources. Please add your suggestions to those already offered. Thanks to everyone
who contributed to these tips.
- Sign your basket with a waterproof fine
black marker on the handle or on the weavers at the underside of your basket.
- Use your initials or your full name
depending on the room available.
- Add a date or year if space allows.
- Adding "Handmade By" is a
nice touch.
- Add a metal tag inscribed with your
name or your company name.
- Use a rubber stamp to print a
personalized impression onto a thin piece of paper that can be glued to the basket or
handle. A few coats of sealer can be painted over the paper if required.
- Use a wood burning tool to write your
signature or initials into the basket. This works especially well on solid wood bases. You
can use the writing tip to sign or purchase a customized logo or signature tip from the
woodburner tool manufacturer.
- Cut a thin diagonal slab from a small
branch to write your name on. Drill a small hole in the slab add a string or raffia strand
to tie the label to your basket.
- Use a tooled leather tie-on impressed
with your company logo or your name. Tie it onto the weaving or the handle of your basket.
- Use a paint pen to sign your name onto
a large petal from a pine cone. Drill a small hole in the end of the petal and string it
onto your basket with raffia or waxed linen.
- Include a specific combination of color
or type of materials that is identifiable as your trademark.
- For example: three rows of indigo blue
weavers near the rim.
- Pine needles dyed a specific color to
form first few rows of the basket start.
- Tie a group of beads strung on waxed
linen in a specific combination that is recognizable as your mark.
