Artist's Studio Basketry Instruction

Individual fiber artists and basketmakers that offer instruction in their own studios.

Joan Carrigan
Basket maker and basketry teacher from Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada. Using roots, Arbutus, Cedar and other barks, sedges, rushes, water iris and other west coast natural materials she creates traditional and sculptural vessels. Joan offers basketweaving workshops at her home studio and on the road.

Jill Choate
Basketmaker, teacher and sled dog owner from Talkeetna, AK. Jill incorporates antlers in much of her work, woven with natural fibers and/or hedgerow (harvested native materials).

Fran Doonan
Passes on the tradition of making pounded black ash baskets by holding classes in her Glenburn, Maine workshop.

Kathey Ervin
Finished baskets, workshops and raw, prepared and dyed cedar bark gathered by Kathey Ervin in the Pacific Northwest.

Bonnie Gale
Beginning and intermediate classes are offered by Bonnie in traditional willow basketry in Norwich, New York. Visiting foreign instructors are hosted each Summer.

Joli Greene
This Maine fiber artist is the founder and owner of Greeneleaf Studios. The studio in Freeport, ME offers a unique mix of workshops for adults in the arts and nature. Basketry, hand-made books, decorative papers, masks and spinning for all levels are among the pursuits followed here.

Susan kavicky
Accomplished black ash basketmaker from Island Lake, IL. Her site features photos of her baskets, artist statement and information on the workshops. She teaches open weave format and special project workshops from her home studio and plays hostess to visiting instructors periodically.

Dr. Margaret Mathewson
Expert in ethnobotany and natural basketry skills. She teaches the process of materials preparation and technique in traditional Western North American native basketry and European willow techniques at her studio, Ancient Arts Center in Alsea, OR and at conferences.

Jeannie McFarland - Baskets And Bullets
Jeannie is the author of numerous pine needle and raffia basketry books. She offers supplies, baskets and workshops in Thorne Bay, Alaska.

John McGuire
Instruction in traditional Black Ash and Nantucket Lightship Basketry taught in John's Geneva, NY studio and in fine craft centers nationwide.

Nadine Spier Studio Classes
Private and group art lessons available in Encinitas, CA at Nadine's home studio. Contemporary coiled basketry in a variety of materials along with woodburning on gourds is offered.

Leandra Spangler
This basket artist from Columbia, MO creates contemporary vessels that are reed forms covered with highly textured handmade paper. She weaves the form as an armature for the application of highly textured handmade paper. A hand polished graphite emulsion creates a luminous protective surface. Her vessels are shown across the country at invitational and juried exhibitions. She teaches workshops at a variety of venues including her own studio in Missouri.

Judy Zugish and Bill Roeder - Fishsticks Basketry
Marysville, WA basket artists offer basketry workshops at Fishsticks Basketry School. Native materials like cedar, bamboo and willow are frequently featured as are native instructors.
